The Provincial System of Khorasan during the Ilkhanate Era
Throughout history, the province of Khorasan has been regarded as a site and center of events due to its unique geographical position, with tribes and peoples from beyond its borders viewing Khorasan as a gateway to enter the Iranian plateau. In fact, prior to the Mongol invasion, Khorasan was considered the most significant base for political and social developments in Iran and even in the eastern Islamic territories, a status that shifted to the province of Azerbaijan following the Mongol onslaught. This situation has rendered Khorasan extraordinarily important for the ruling Iranian governments, and whenever these governments faced weakness and dissolution, it created an opportunity for the tribes settled along the eastern borders to move from Khorasan toward the center of the country.
